This homemade meat sauce is made more nutritious using lean ground turkey instead of fatty ground beef. It gets a flavor boost from a dash of red pepper flakes.

Ingredients

1 spray(s) cooking spray

1 cup(s) onion(s), chopped

4 medium garlic clove(s), minced

56 oz canned tomatoes, plum-variety, undrained, coarsely chopped

6 oz canned tomato paste

1 1/2 tsp dried basil

1 tsp dried oregano

1 tsp sugar

1/2 tsp table salt, optional

1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes, optional

20 oz Jennie-O Turkey Store Lean Ground Turkey

12 oz uncooked spaghetti, cooked without added salt and fat, drained

2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese, or Romano cheese

Instructions

  • Coat a large saucepan with cooking spray; heat over medium-high heat.

  • Add onion to skillet; cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic; cook 2 minutes. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, sugar and, if desired, salt and pepper flakes; bring to a simmer. Simmer uncovered 25 to 35 minutes or until sauce is desired consistency.

  • Meanwhile, cook turkey in a large skillet until no longer pink, breaking into chunks with a wooden spoon. Stir turkey into sauce; heat through. Serve over spaghetti and sprinkle with cheese.
